Whether you're a local looking for a quiet escape or a traveler trying to see Portland's highlights, the International Rose Test Garden is a beautiful, free, and easily accessible stop. With over 10,000 rose bushes, a romantic atmosphere, stunning views, and seasonal blooms, it's a reminder of why Portland is known as the City of Roses.
We stopped at the International Rose Test Garden on our way back from Cannon Beach (see our blog for more details about this adventure). We went in the afternoon but would recommend going in the morning for fewer crowds and softer light. Even if you are not a “flower person”, this is an incredible spot.
What to Expect

The Rose Garden feels like a hidden world within the city. Row after row of vibrant blooms, perfectly maintained terraces, and walking paths that encourage you to slow down. It's one of the oldest continuously operating public rose test gardens in the U.S., and many of the varieties here are not yet available to the public. You will see roses that are larger than your hands!
